Indio Metal Arts
Shelly is an Oregon native with a BS in both sculpture and graphic design from Portland State University where she fell in love with steel during her first welding class.
Growing up, Shelly always made things with her hands and used scraps and remnants from around the house, becoming resourceful and reluctant to waste anything. In her current work, she uses as much salvaged material as possible because scrap has an imbedded history and character that folds into each piece built.
The scrap metal inspires what she creates, so each piece is one-of-a-kind and incorporates clean lines, bold and graphic shapes. The focus is on the elegance of form, saying the most with the least material.
In her late teens, Shelly majored in ceramics and apprenticed with a potter. She studied jewelry making at the Multnomah Arts Center and studied photography at three institutions. Her own garden is used as a backdrop for all the photos of my artwork.
